Two waves of players

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

For our disc golf doubles in Walhalla today we had only six players for the 1:30 tee time.  Another 8 playes showed up slightly after 2:00 and played.  In the early wave the scores were -5, -4 & -2.  In the second wave, Aaron Cunningham shot -9 playing the lone wolf and there was a -8 and -7.  So the course is proving to be like Timmons.  Lots of birdies chances and you’ll have to score to place.

The reviews were good.  Most liked the course.  No plans right now for a tournament or league in 2009 but that can always change.  I’d like to see a SCDGO event in Walhalla.

Black Friday Disc Golf Doubles in Walhalla

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

I’m going to be at the Walhalla Course on Friday between 1-1:30 and you’re invited to join me for a round of doubles at the newest Disc Golf Course in the upstate of South Carolina.

Greater Oconee Disc Golf has been working hard on both the Seneca Course, where we do a majority of the work, and been helping in Walhalla where the parks department does a lot of work with only two full time employees.

The Walhalla Disc Golf Course is a course that has a chance for someone to shoot double digits but one bad whack on a tree or a roll off of the basket and you’ll find yourself down a hill or in the drink.

If you end up in the creek, your disc will be retrievable but it won’t be as easy as getting your disc out of the creek at Timmons.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday.

New Seneca Pins a Hit (and one miss)

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Today we had a random draw doubles to try out the new suggested pin placements.  We had 13 players so for the doubles and several other that were at the course.  Most of the feedback was positive.

Hole 2 - The first of the new pin placements.  It’s longer and slightly left of the current pin placement and will a much more difficult placement to deuce.  It’s fair and no complaints about the new placement.

Hole 3 - Shorter and way left of current location.  You make the first turn and if you’re in the middle of the fairway, you’ll have a slight hyzer shot to the pin.  Still a hard hole to deuce but will be a hole that most will be able to manage a 3.

Hole 4 - Longer and left.  A really nice placement with a added degree of difficulty.  I think this will be a hard hole to deuce.

Hole 5 - Longer…straight behind the current location which makes it a blind approach.  I really see few deuces and a lot more 4s and 5s.

Hole 11 - Longer and over the creek.  I actually threw past the hole today by 50′+.  So the hole is reachable.  Zach Rogers said that Jim Cunningham hit the top of the basket while practicing before the event.  If you don’t make the turn, it will be a hard hole to ’save par’ on.

Hole 12 - Right of the current location and longer.  Will take away the right-hand back-hand birdies but makes it a lefty type hole.

Hole 13 - Same distance…just a bigger turn around the corner.  This is the only hole to get negative feedback.  Some thought the new location added nothing to the hole.  I like the new location and thought it made it more difficult for me.  I guess it depends on whether or not you turn the corner.

Those are the holes with changes.  We hope to see you at Seneca Disc Golf Course soon!

First ‘Real’ Round in Walhalla

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

I played the Walhalla disc golf course yesterday for the first real time.  That meaning since all the baskets are in the tee pads marked.  I shot a 49 with eight birdies and one triple boggie.

The triple was one the hole 10 (I think) where you shoot out of the woods.  This particular hole is probable the tightest fairway with a significant drop off to the right.  The fairway kind of snakes along with some trees in the middle of the fairway.  Think of Seneca’s hole five with two or three trees in the middle of the fairway…just a shorter hole.  Once you get out of the woods, the hole sits on a knoll with a decent drop to the right…look for some tournament rolls on this hole in the future.

This course can support someone shooting 15 down on the right day…similar to Timmons…every hole can be deuced…but the wrong whack on a tree can turn a good round ugly right away.

Walhalla will be one of the most beautiful courses in the upstate…there’s a small water fall off of hole 5 and some great tunnel type shots and other with the creek within 15-20 feet behind the hole.  While your disc will be recoverable, it won’t be as easy to retrieve a disc from as is the creek in Easley or at Timmons.

I will look to host a tournament at Walhalla this next year.

Seneca Doubles

Friday, November 21st, 2008

GODG is planning a doubles on Sunday November 23rd with the new pin placements on holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 13 and 15.  The club spent four days over two weekends in October clearing, thinning and laying out these new pin placements and we would love some feedback before making them permanent.

Plan is to meet at 3pm to play.  Those with portable baskets are asked to bring them to make it easier than moving the baskets now.

Walhalla Disc Golf Course

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

The Walhalla Disc Golf Course is almost complete.

I went to Walhalla yesterday (Mon 11/17) and walked the course with the park and rec guys.  All holes are in the ground, tee pads are marked but not complete yet and the fairways are cut and cleared.

The course looks like it will play a bit more difficult than I had first thought.  While there are plenty of birds to be had, there is also trouble lurking in several places.

I was told that six holes will have multiple tee pads and while multiple pin placements are not in the plans right now, most holes have enough room to add an additional pin placement in the future.

Greater Oconee Disc Golf will try and plan a Sunday doubles in Walhalla for the sake of getting people out to the new course.  I do believe that most will enjoy playing South Carolina’s newest course.

Course Upgrades

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

The Seneca Disc Golf Course is under going some changes this off season.  The club has purchased eight additional sleeves and eight holes will have alternative pin placements by spring time.

Work has begun.  Hole #2 will have a longer, slightly left placement that will make it a bit harder to get a deuce and cause bad tee shots have a difficult time saving the three.

Hole #3’s new pin placement is going to be where the large pile of brush used to sit.  It has been cleared.  It will make the long 2 possible.  The distance off the tee will be close to the current location with the big difference being a straight shot when you turn the first corner.

Hole #4 will be a much more difficult hole.  An additional 100′ plus is being added.  With the additional distance also comes with a more open hole.  The left side of the fairway has been opened and the Disc eating bush/vines on the right-side of the fairway have been removed.

Hole 5 will have an additional long location farther down toward the green-way.  The hole will have a chance of going OB on upshots to the pin that go long.

Hole 11’s new location is on the other-side of the creek at an additional 100′ + with a difficult second shot if you don’t turn the corner.

Hole 12’s alternative location isn’t set in stone yet.  One possibility is going long left and the other is long right.  Both potential locations have been cleared.

Hole 13 will be farther left than where it is now.   A good tee shot will have the same chances of a birdie run as the current location but if you don’t have nice drive, saving the three will be hard work.

Hole 15’s new location hasn’t been cleared yet and there is still discussion among the club as where to put the second pin placement.

There will be a Sunday doubles in Seneca soon to get feedback before moving the baskets.  Details will be available here.
