A Chua Ram Course a possibility
Friday, June 19th, 2009On Thursday, June 18th, Oconee County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ‘State of Oconee’ luncheon in Walhalla. Oconee County and all municipalities were given an opportunity to talk about their communities and share ideas and information. As for me, the presentation done by the mayor of Westminster was the most interesting. Mostly because because he talked about his desire to build a disc golf course on 125 acres of land the City of Westminster owns adjacent to Chau Ram park on Highway 76 between Westminster and Long Creek.Apparently 5 baskets have been purchased and the mayor is going to work with Oconee County Parks, Recreation and Tourism to seek funding for the other 13 baskets. The hope is they’ll be able to find 13 businesses (or more) that would be willing to ’sponsor’ a hole at the course. That could mean their name and logo on a tee sign and/or basket at the course. The mayor of Westminster is a causal player that you won’t see at tournaments or leagues but loves to play and wants to make Westminster a destination for disc golf players. With 125 acres to use with water, elevation changes and old growth hardwoods, this could become one of the most beautiful courses in the Southeast and one of the most challenging. I’ve been hiking out in that area and there is a real possibility of an amazing course.
