Club Member US Champion!

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Sarah Stanhope, a long time member and supporter of the Great Oconee Disc Golf club, is the reigning United States Women’s Disc Golf Champion!

Sarah won with a stunning final round coming back from several down, and in third place, to not only beat the world women’s champion but to claim the national championship with a round rated at 1021!

Sarah won her first National Tour Event only a few weeks ago and her and her partner Aaron Cunningham won the 5th annual Border Wars Labor Day weekend.

The Intermediate Women’s Champion is Christine Savvikis from Greenville.  Christine came from second place in the final round to win her division.  Two South Carolina women are reigning US Champions.

Good Job Sarah and Christine.

Walhalla League

Friday, September 18th, 2009

The Walhalla Thursday night league has come to an end.  Due to having to meet with the Seneca City Council at a work session next Thursday night concerning a new 18 hole course, I will not be able to run a Wahalla league next week.

It was a good three week run with several new to league and competitive disc golf players.  Thanks to everyone that made it a success!

City of Clemson getting a course

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The City of Clemson is getting a 9 hole course in Mountain View Park.  According to an article that appeared in today’s Greenville News, a local boy scout approached the City of Clemson about putting a course in the 34 acre park.  The city agreed.

The course should be in sometime between now and the spring.  While I can’t say for sure, giving the boys involvement in Boy Scouts and his age (15) I suspect he is building the course for an Eagle Scout project. The course where I lived in Estherville, IA was putting in by a Scout working on becoming an Eagle Scout.

With the news of Oconee County Council approving a course and the recent course installation at the Y Beach at Clemson University; this area of the state is becoming a hot-bed of the sport.

More details as they become available.

SC Wins

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

The 5th Border Wars between South Carolina and Georgia took place today with South Carolina winning big by 99.5 to 70.5.  The series now stands at 3-2 with Georgia having the advantage.

The South Carolina team was strong across the board by winning every division.  They won the pro field 10-3; the advanced field 21-3; the mixed field 6-3 and the intermediate field 62.5 to 61.5.

The winning team over all was Aaron Cunningham and Sarah Stanhope.  Advanced winners we Two Left Crew and the Mixed division winners were Dine & Dash.  The intermediate field was the only division that a Georgia team took first place.

New Course Update

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

I talked with the Mayor of Westminster this afternoon.  He is ready. He told me that his goal is to create one of the best courses in South Carolina.  He wants to make the Chua Ram course one that will be one of the most challenging courses in this region of the country.

Plans are to use 1 acre per hole…or more…what ever is required to make it a great course. He talked about having the course play along the river and making sure some of the great views from different points in the park be back drops to some of the holes.

I’ve done some hiking at Chau Ram and I can imagine some great holes…with water and waterfalls coming into play or at least adding to the experience of playing there. I’m going to meet with the mayor and the county park and rec in the future to see what help they need in getting this course in the ground.

Another Course Approved for Oconee County!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

In a meeting Tuesday, the Oconee County Council approved entering into an agreement with the City of Westminster to build an 18 hole course on 18 acres adjacent to Chau Ram County Park. Chau Ram is owned by the City of Westminster and leased to the county. Westminster owns an additional 125 acres that is not part of the County Park.

Westminster Mayor Derek Hodgin proposed the project and will take the lead in raising funds to build the course. Mayor Hodgin recently had a Discatcher basket placed in Anderson Park in Westminster. There’s a disc with the basket for anyone that visits that park to practice their hand at the sport.

I talked with Oconee County Park, Recreation & Tourism Director Phil Shirley this morning. He said while there’s not a timeline for the installation of the course, he says mayor Hodgin believes raising funds for the course and tee pads won’t be a problem.

Once installed Oconee County will have four 18 hole courses and one nine hole course. Current courses are in Seneca at Shaver Recreation Center; in Walhalla at Sertoma Field; in Clemson at the Y Beach (on the Oconee side of the river); and a 9 hole course on the DAR School in Salem.

The City of Seneca will consider funding a second 18-hole course at Shaver Recreation later this fall. GODG has been working with the City of Seneca to expand their Disc Golf offering for several months.
