New Course Design

November 20th, 2009

Now that funding for 18 baskets has been secured for the new course at Shaver Recreation Complex in Seneca, we’re working on a design. If you’re interested in being part of the new course, we’ll have a few 17X11″ color maps available and two really big B&W maps on Saturday during the Golden Corner Classic.

Following the tournament Saturday, if people are interested and there’s enough light, we’ll take a walking tour of some of the land that is available for the new course. We’re looking to design the best possible course on the available land. As many ideas to potential hole locations and layout will be taken into consideration.

We also have 12 additional sleeves coming with the baskets for multiple pin placements. The overall vision for the course will include multiple pin locations on most holes and duel tee pads on all holes and possibly three tees per hole.

The property includes a creek, a marsh, a couple of bridges for crossing the creek and marsh. There’s some old-growth oaks and small scrub pines. Some areas have elevation changes of 60′ or more while other parts of the land is relatively flat. We look forward to your input and help.

Golden Corner Classic

The GCC is this Saturday in Seneca.  Day of registration only.  Info (flyer) is linked on the sidebar.  I hope to see you Saturday.

Less than 20 & one will be in Seneca

November 15th, 2009

According to the PDGA there are only 17 parks in the country with two disc golf courses in the same location.  Only three of those parks are in the Southeast.  When the new course at Shaver Recreation Complex goes in the ground in 2010, Seneca will be the 18th such development in the world and the 4th in the Southeast.

With the closeness of the Walhalla & Clemson courses and the additional course planned for Oconee County, we could become a Disc Golf destination point.

Club Member to be on TV tonight

November 12th, 2009

According to UpstateFrolfer.com Sarah Stanhope will be featured during a story on WYFF News Channel 4 about this weekend’s Upstate Classic. Sarah is a member and volunteer for Greater Oconee Disc Golf. She also is the reigning women’s Disc Golf National Champion and one of the best female Disc Golf players in the world.

The story will also feature upstate player Brandon Barker. The story is suppose to air in one of this evening’s newscasts.

A new course coming to Seneca

November 11th, 2009

The Seneca City Council voted Tuesday to give Greater Oconee Disc Golf $6,000 to purchase 18 new Innova DisCatcher Disc Golf Baskets for a second course at Shaver Recreation Complex.  The money will be given to the Park & Recreation Department and is earmarked for building the new course.

Here is a attachment to a map of the land that will be used for development of the course.  It is somewhere between 50-70 acres of land with some nice elevation changes, a creek, thick woods in some areas, and small pines in other areas.  The map also includes sewer lines.  The sewer lines are kept clear and the grass is cut regularly in case there is ever a need for the lines to be tapped into or repaired.  We have the opportunity to use those lines for actual hole locations and fairways or as transition between holes.  Similar to what the course at Sertoma Field in Walhalla has done.

Details on how you can help with course design and clearing land to come on this site in the future.

Local Tourism Site added Disc Golf

November 5th, 2009

The local tourism site, SCMountainLakes.com, has added Disc Golf to their website. It looks like they cut and pasted information from our site. It’s a start.

Ken Sloan, the director, emailed me the other day wanting to know how they can get more involved. I’m meeting with Ken next week to discuss working together.

When you go to the site, click on Experience, then scroll down to Disc Golf.

Map For Planning the New Course

November 5th, 2009

Hey all, Following this link to a pdf file. This file “Shaver map from city” shows the contours of the land, man holes, water mains, scale and the current course. The area that is open for us to develop a course on is, the centric sort of washed out bit. Please take this pdf and draw out what you think would be a good course.

When you print the map you may have to select “shrink to fit printable area” or something like that. Please use the scale to produce holes averaging 400+ ft. I will be back to modify out guidelines for the new course next week. We will look at the map and come up w/ some guidelines this weekend during our work days on the 7th and 8th (see work days post).

I was trying to post the pdf w/in this post but had no luck. Thus, I put it in my google docs and made it available to everyone. If you have trouble getting the file email
the club and we will send it to you.

Cheers, Mike.
